Bird Basics Docent Program

Purpose
Most students, when asked where environmental problems are will talk about  the rain forest, or third world countries.  They are not aware of the environmental challenges we face in our own communities.  The Bird Basics program exists to get people, especially teachers and children, excited about birds and their habitat, because if you are excited about birds, you are more likely to act and make decisions toward the protection of them.

Docents
Education volunteers provide 40 minute, classroom presentations to elementary school classes in their spare time.  Docents are not bird experts or professional educators, but have enthusiasm and a willingness to learn more themselves and share it with others.   If you are interested in becoming a docent or would like more information please contact Christine Jacobs at kingfisher@iname.com

Presentations
Presentations focus on an introduction to birds with an emphasis on Southern California and urban birds students are likely to see in their own neighborhoods.  The presentation is intended to be an introduction to birds.  Teachers and students are encouraged to continue to learn and study more on their own.  Presentations end with a short discussion of what students can do to help birds.
